The Eclectic Corner #8: My Unrealistic Christmas List

The Eclectic Corner is a feature on The Left-Handed Book Lover in which I talk about basically anything I want. A whole variety of topics! This is kinda like my chance to talk about non-bookish things. I came up with this idea because I really wanted to incorporate my love of TV shows and music somehow. This gives me a chance to connect with other readers and bloggers beyond similar taste in books.

So basically on this list are going to be things I really want but would never ask anyone to get me because MONEY (or because they're just not feasible wishes). This year it has been a bit tougher to decide because my situation is VASTLY different than it has been in the past 2 years. Beside straight up money, there's not a whole lot I need, but here we go!

I'm something of a clothes addict, and ya girl has not purchased any new clothes in a hot minute. It's torture, I tell ya. TORTURE! But with the onslaught of adulthood comes bills and grad school application fees and other less-fun things I have to spend money on. So, if someone could just take me into a store or two and be like, "Hey girly, buy everything your little heart desires," that would be ideal, thanks.

Speaking of grad school applications, I really wouldn't mind if someone handed me an acceptance letter or two. Applying has been an exhausting, nerve wracking process, and I'm not even close to being finished yet. Also, am very much convinced that I'm not going to get accepted anywhere so I'd like it if that, you know, weren't the case.

Listen, I don't like country music, but Shania Twain is my queen. My goddess. MY PRESIDENT. I am literally obsessed with her and this little last hurrah tour she's doing would be my once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see her live, which is basically the dream. Funny story, though, I'M GOING TO BE OUT OF THE COUNTRY WHEN SHE'S TOURING so I guess the caveat to this wishlist item would be that I get tickets and meet & greet passes during a time when I'd actually be able to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be bitter about this until the day I go, just so everyone is aware.

So I have a slight tattoo problem. I currently have 7 and want at least a billion more. Problem is, they're expensive. I just don't see anyone in my family paying for me to get more anytime soon. Let's just say I'm pretty much the only ink enthusiast in my family.

Sunday Post #34

  • I know I haven't been around for the past few weeks, but that's only because I didn't have internet access. But I am back and I am trying to get posts scheduled so that I still have stuff going up when school starts (we all know how terrible I am at blogging during the school year).
  • I'm back in Arkansas, which means I'm not in Florida anymore which is devastating, but I had a wonderful time! I got to spend so much quality time with my brother and sister and it broke my heart to leave, but it's time to get back to the real world. I move into my new apartment TOMORROW with my best friend. It's crazy. This will be the first time I'm living in an off-campus place and paying bills.
  • It's shaping up to be a tough semester, with getting everything in order for grad school (which includes taking the GRE) and preparing for my semester abroad, along with all the other responsibilities I'll have (I got a job in my school's English department and I write for the school newspaper (hoping they'll start paying me) and I'm the philanthropy chair for my sorority). So. Yeah. It's gonna get crazy very quickly.
  • THAT SAID: I AM ON THE LOOK OUT FOR A CO-BLOGGER, SO IF YOU''RE INTERESTED FEEL FREE TO COMMENT DOWN BELOW OR EMAIL ME AT LEFTYREADS21@GMAIL.COM OR HIT ME UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

The Eclectic Corner #7: Song Lyrics

The Eclectic Corner is a feature on The Left-Handed Book Lover in which I talk about basically anything I want. A whole variety of topics! This is kinda like my chance to talk about non-bookish things. I came up with this idea because I really wanted to incorporate my love of TV shows and music somehow. This gives me a chance to connect with other readers and bloggers beyond similar taste in books.

For some reason, I feel like I don't actually talk about music that much on my blog, and that is just a plain ol' travesty because IT'S MUSIC WHO DOESN'T LOVE MUSIC.

So here are some song lyrics I really vibe with.

**disclaimer - I literally chose songs from my favorite lyricists, so while I honestly love all the lyrics that these artists have graced us with, these are the ones that really just speak to my heart, ya know?
THE RUN AND GO BY TWENTY ONE PILOTS

TWICE BY CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN

TIME IS ALL AROUND BY REGINA SPEKTOR

POEMS BY HIPPO CAMPUS

Have you heard any of these songs? What are some of your favorite song lyrics???

As I mentioned earlier this week, I had a fairly rough spring semester. In fact, pretty much everyone I know did, including my best friend. So, we're determined to have an incredible summer, especially considering next semester is going to be our last semester together.

Thus, I present you with our summer bucket list of sorts, called "Grabbi's (which is our "ship" name) Sun-Kissed List."

The Eclectic Corner #5: My Unrealistic Christmas List

The Eclectic Corner is a feature on The Left-Handed Book Lover in which I talk about basically anything I want. A whole variety of topics! This is kinda like my chance to talk about non-bookish things. I came up with this idea because I really wanted to incorporate my love of TV shows and music somehow. This gives me a chance to connect with other readers and bloggers beyond similar taste in books.

I did my very first Eclectic Corner post almost exactly a year ago, and it was MY UNREALISTIC CHRISTMAS LIST. People seemed to really like it, so I figured it would be perfect to bring that topic back around.

So basically on this list are going to be things I really want but would never ask anyone to get me because MONEY (or because they're just not feasible wishes). While almost all the things I mentioned in the original post are still true (except for a cat--I have one now <33) I am going to choose different answers this time.

Now that I've gotten into bookstagram and booktube, my low-quality camera just isn't doing what I want it to. It's sufficient enough, I suppose, but if I want to step up my game on both of those platforms (which I do) I desperately need an upgrade. But good cameras are so expensive, soooooo it might be a hot minute until that happens.

Fun fact--sororities are heckin expensive. And I'm in two (one is a women's fraternity, but same thing). They take a huge chunk of the cash I could be using for food OR BOOKS. If someone just wanted to be an angel and pay for my next two semesters, I promise I wouldn't be mad about it.

In case anyone was uncertain, Twenty One Pilots is my favorite band ever. I'm just a tiny little bit VERY MUCH obsessed with them, and they put on some incredible concerts. My dream would be to be in the pit at their next concert, but those tickets were sold out many moons ago.

So, I really really really want to study abroad in Austria next spring, but it largely depends on the estimated cost, because I can only save up so much in the next year. There's still a definite possibility I'll be able to do it, but it would just be so much easier if someone else forked over a ton of moolah for it.

There's my unrealistic Christmas list. I believe in miracles, though, so who knows?

The Eclectic Corner #4: Scary Movies

The Eclectic Corner is a feature on The Left-Handed Book Lover in which I talk about basically anything I want. A whole variety of topics! This is kinda like my chance to talk about non-bookish things. I came up with this idea because I really wanted to incorporate my love of TV shows and music somehow. This gives me a chance to connect with other readers and bloggers beyond similar taste in books.

Today I am here to talk to you about scary movies, which I honestly can't believe I haven't thought to do sooner. In this post, I am using the term "scary movies" as a blanket term for all the different types (slasher, paranromal, gory, etc.).

Here's the thing: I'm not really a movie person. I know that sounds crazy because HOW CAN SOMEONE NOT LIKE MOVIES? Well, okay, I do like movies, but I don't feel compelled to watch them as often as most people. I prefer TV shows, so when I'm by myself I'm usually binge-watching a show. Movie watching is reserved for time spent with other people. That said, I adore scary movies. Every time I see a preview for a scary movie, I immediately add to my list of movies I need to watch ASAP.

This was originally going to be a list of my favorite scary movies, but that became way too difficult after about fifteen seconds, so I decided to just talk about some scary movies that have left an impression on me recently.

Please note that even if it seems like there are spoilers, there are not. I was very careful not to give any clues as to what happens to the characters.

Starting with my favorite scary movie of all time:

Opinions on this movie tend to be pretty split--some people thought it was the dumbest thing they've ever seen, some people loved it. I am, obviously, with the latter category.

This is commonly referred to as "the grandparents movie" because it is about two kids who go visit their grandparents and shit starts getting weird. My friends and I walked into this movie thinking it was going to be a joke. We'd seen the trailer a billion times and always laughed hysterically when the grandma asks, "Would you mind getting inside the oven and cleaning it?"

We walked out of the movie with our minds blown. And then, about a week later, we watched it a second time and it was still just as AMAZING. The reason I am so crazy about this movie is because it defies a person's typical expectations of a scary movie (cheesy, predictable, tons of jump scares). This movie has some absolutely hilarious parts (intentional comedy, not the type of hilarious that comes from cheesiness) and great dialogue. The characters have depth and personality and experience growth throughout the novel. On top of all that, there is a super creepy-factor that does not rely entirely on I-feel-it-coming jump scares, and, of course (it is M. Night Shyamalan after all), there is a twist at the end that some people saw coming but my friends and I did not. The big reveal gave me goosebumps both times I watched it!

We still talk about this movie ALL THE TIME and I still tell everyone they need to watch it because it's probably my favorite movie ever. If you think it's stupid, that's fine, I understand, but also I just disagree so much.

A scary (ish) movie I saw recently:

This movie, starring Blake Lively (<3333), is about a girl who is visiting a beach to honor her recently-passed mother and ends up getting hunted by a shark in the middle of the ocean, stuck on a rock, trying to figure how she could possibly get out of this alive.

I don't know that I'd classify this as a scary movie. It's more like a thriller with occasional gory parts. I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie, because how much could possibly happen when there is a girl stuck on a rock and a shark circling her? BUT HOLY FREAKING CRAP DID I ENJOY IT. It was so so soooooo intense. My friend and I were literally flailing in the theater because there were parts with so. much. tension.

There were several aspects that made this movie so interesting to me and made it stand apart from other movies. Firstly, the hopelessness. There was no foreseeable solution. I could tell that all rescue attempts would be fruitless. Despite the hopelessness, I dared to hope anyway. I allowed myself to think maybe a person would be able to save her.

Secondly, there was Nancy's (the protagonist) perseverance. Like 20 minutes into the movie, my friend and I turned to each other and said we would likely just give up at that point. Obviously there would be no movie if she just decided to give up right away, but the situation seemed, like I said above, pretty hopeless. But Nancy kept the gears turning trying to figure out how to survive the situation. She took an active role in her survival, was willing to fight for it, rather than just hoping for the best, which is what a lot of characters do in scary movies.

Lastly, what really built the tension and intrigue of the movie for me was that we didn't always know what was going on in Nancy's head. She was isolated in the middle of the ocean so it's not like she had someone to explain her actions to. All of a sudden she would just start doing something strange, and I'd think, "Okay, what is she doing? Wtf? GIRL WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" But all I could do was wait and see.

NETFLIX FAVORITES*:

* Goodnight Mommy is actually on Amazon Prime, but I didn't feel like giving it its own category.

OTHER FAVORITES:
I wasn't sure where to put these movies in this post, but I knew they needed to be mentioned because they are seriously amazing.

RECENT DISAPPOINTMENTS:

I was really looking forward to all of these movies, but, to be blunt, they were all much stupider and less scary than I was hoping they'd be.

NEWISH/UPCOMING MOVIES I WANT TO WATCH:
Wellllllll now you know. I've watched more scary movies than what is most likely considered healthy for the human brain. And all of these were watched more or less within the last year. Hah!

Do you love scary movies, too? I'd love to chat with you about them! Tell me what your favorite scary moves are. Also, let me know if you agree or disagree with anything I said in this post!

The Eclectic Corner #3: What I've Been Binge Watching

The Eclectic Corner is a feature on The Left-Handed Book Lover in which I talk about basically anything I want. A whole variety of topics! This is kinda like my chance to talk about non-bookish things. I came up with this idea because I really wanted to incorporate my love of TV shows and music somehow. This gives me a chance to connect with other readers and bloggers beyond similar taste in books.

If there is anything I love as much as reading, it's watching TV shows. Trust me when I say I get my money's worth from my Netflix account. And so, I decided to tell you about some of the things I've been watching recently.

CURRENTLY WATCHING:

Netflix blurb: Fiercely independent single mom Lorelai raises gifted, Ivy League-bound daughter Rory amid a continual stream of quick-witted repartee.
Seasons: 7
Where I'm at: Season 4, episode 7
My quick thoughts: This show is dialogue goals. It's clever and entertaining. This show introduces delightful, quirky characters and a charming small town you're going to want to live in.

OTHER SHOWS I'VE BINGED RECENTLY:

Netflix blurb: Fast-talking city girl Zoe Hart winds up patching up the locals of a tiny town in the Deep South when she inherits a medical practice in Alabama,
Seasons: 4
My quick thoughts: I've binge watched this series twice. It's kind of a guilty pleasure--not the most mind-blowing show I've ever watched, but I became addicted to the characters, the will-they-won't-they romances, and the most southern small town one could possibly imagine.

Netflix blurb: In this new TV series sequel to the classic horror franchise, a cyber bullying incident in Lakewood leads to a murder with chilling echoes of the past.
Seasons: 1 (new season airs on MTV May 31)
My quick thoughts: This show contains some of the cheesiest moments I've ever seen on TV, and the acting isn't the greatest. And yet...there's something about this show that I just loved. It's fast-paced and a decent mystery (which I did end up predicting fairly early on), and it was interesting to watch the characters put all the pieces of the mystery together. It's not really scary, though.

Netflix blurb: Rudderless without their missing leader, four formerly tight high school friends band together when a blackmailer threatens to spill their dirt.
Seasons: 5 (for now)
My quick thoughts: This is another show that is like a guilty pleasure for me. I was utterly obsessed with this show for weeks. Again, not exactly the most quality example of television, but the plot is quick and can get really intense. It's fun trying to figure out WTF is going on, and I fell in love with the characters.

Netflix blurb: After years in foster care, teenager Lux tracks down her real parents to authorize her emancipation. But she lands in their joint custody instead.
Seasons: 2
My quick thoughts: I'm a bit more meh on this one than the other shows I've talked about. I mostly used this show to get over my TV hangover after Hart of Dixie. Still, this show has some very touching moments, and in the second season things get really intense and emotional (in a good way).

Netflix blurb: A former superhero decides to reboot her life by becoming a private investigator.
Seasons: 1 (for now)
My quick thoughts: HOLY CRAP THIS IS SO GOOD. A bit of a slow start, but by the end of the first episode I was hooked. Jessica Jones is such a wonderful character, and David Tennant (major heart eyes) makes a villain you will love to hate. This show is delightfully gritty and touches on some really important, tough subjects.

Have you watched any of these shows? If so, please discuss with me!! I want to know your thoughts. Also, if you have suggestions, I am all ears.
