Top Ten Books That Surprised Me

(This meme is actually hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl now, but I am far too lazy to make a new graphic)

As devoted readers, I think that we tend to have a pretty good idea of which books we will enjoy and which books we won't, but occasionally a book comes along and surprises us--which can be a good thing or a bad thing. I present to you five books that I liked much more than I expected and 5 books I disliked more than I expected.

1) Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman - Whenever there is a lot of hype surrounding a book, I try to brace myself for disappointment, but this novel exceeded my expectations. It is addicting and fun and I fell in love with the characters.

2) Coming Up for Air by Miranda Kenneally - I'd read some of Kenneally's other books in this series, and while they were okay, they were nothing worth raving about (for me--other people adore them!). However, I really enjoyed this one! I thought it had depth and lots of kissing and really good messages.

3) Caraval by Stephanie Garber - This is another book I was hesitant to read because of the hype but it completely stole my heart. It was an emotional roller coaster. The whole novel kept me engaged and eager to find out what happens next.

4) Aftercare Instructions by Bonnie Pipkin - I didn't know what to expect from this one, but it was gritty and interesting and had fascinating, unique formatting.

5) And I Darken by Kiersten White - This one was completely unexpected. I'm not really one for historical fiction or dense YA novels, which this one definitely is, but I fell so in love with the characters and the story. I couldn't stop talking about it for months!

1) Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher - I can't even put my finger on what was disappointing about this. I ate it up in like one sitting, but, in retrospect, it just wasn't that riveting.

2) The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder - I was expecting something beautiful and poignant with a premise that sounded interesting and magical. That's not what I got. The emotion in this book was unconvincing and the protagonist was infuriating. I was completely unsatisfied at the end of this novel.

3) Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard - I thought the first book in the series was really interesting and I was invested in the characters, but this sequel was boring and painful to get through. The ending picked up a bit, but not enough.

4) Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - This book just reeks of creepiness and darkness and FUN, but it was really slow. And not really creepy.

5) A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - Maybe it's my fault for letting the hype get to me, but I was completely underwhelmed by this book. Again, the ending was pretty good, but it was such a struggle to get through like 2/3 of it.

August Recap

Well, summer has come and gone, and now I'm back at school. kicking off my junior year of college. I'm about a week in and I'm already dead. College is so non-stop. I feel like I have very few moments to myself, and very few moments to myself in which I am not working on homework. Now, my best friend and I live in an on-campus apartment so everyone wants to come over all the time and our other roommate (who we didn't know) hate us because we're so loud.

ALSO ALSO ALSO I ALMOST FORGOT!! I went to a Twenty One Pilots concert and my oh my was that glorious. Twenty One Pilots is my favorite band in the whole wide world and now that I've seen them live, I will never be the same.

My blog got a makeover!!! I did it a few weeks ago, but I'm still obsessed with it. I loved my old design when I first created it, several years ago. But I've changed and my blog has developed, and it was time for something new. I was scared to change it at first, but I'm extremely pleased now that I have.

As far as reading goes, August was not the best month. Not the worst month, either. But not the best. Blogging is a different story. In August, I blogged more than I have any other month since I started my blog. I did my best to have a post go up every day, but there were a few days in which that just didn't happen.

Help me save my blog!!!

I love thinking of new features for this blog, and it has been a while since I implemented any of the new ideas I've had, but in August I started doing...
I've seen people around twitter doing aesthetics for basically everything, including books, and I wanted to give it a try! If you don't know, a book aesthetic is basically putting together pictures that remind you of the book (the colors on the cover, the vibe it gives off, events from the book). I'm not great at it now, but I think I'll get better!

HERE IS MY FIRST BOOK AESTHETICS POST

I decided to compile an aesthetic for 3 books that take place in summer, as I'm back at school and lamenting the loss of my laziness.

Music:
As I mentioned earlier, I went to a Twenty One Pilots concert this month, and so I kind of don't want to listen to anything else at the moment.

TV:
I finished Glee and I've been so emotionally torn apart by it that I'm left to re-binge watch Gossip Girl. Also, I'v started re-watching American Horror Story in preparation for season 6. I'M SO EXCITED HOLY CRAP ON A CRAP CONE.

Movies:
So, I watched Sausage Party this month. Uh, well. I'm not sure what to say about it. I thought it was clever and hilarious and utterly disturbing (but what else do you expect from a Seth Rogen movie???). If you're into really abrasive & inappropriate humor, this is the movie for you!!! Just be warned, there is a reason this movie is rated R.

Sunday Post #23

  • This is the last week I'm posting my Sunday Post on not-Sunday, so yay! I just don't feel right posting this on Saturday XD
  • And as you might be able to tell, I GAVE MY BLOG A MAKEOVER. I'm so excited. I was nervous about changing things at first, but I absolutely love it! I think it looks much cleaner and better fits what I want for my blog now. I created the first design in November of 2013, so nearly three years ago. Since then, both my blog and myself have changed a lot, so this new design feels kind of like embracing all that change. I really hope you all like it as much as I do!
  • Anyway, this was my last week of summer vacation. I'll be moving back to school tomorrow and I'm excited and also not excited at the same time. This week I went with my dad to see my aunt who, despite us only living about 45 minutes away from each other, I haven't seen since Christmas-time. It was really nice to see her again before heading back to school!
  • Then, Thursday, my friend and I got mani-pedis in preparation for the new semester. Hooray pampering! I wanted to get my hair done too before going back to school, but that just didn't happen. *sighs dramatically*

Sarah from The YA Book Traveler posted about self-doubt and why it's a good thing. I think every blogger could stand to hear what she says, since we probably all suffer from self-doubt in some form or another.

Rachel from Parajunkee provided a really handy book blogging post ideas list. Feeling a bit slumpy? Maybe this list can give you some ideas.

I didn't intend on getting any more books this month (aside from school books), but Hastings is going out of business, so of course I had to snag a few bargain books while I was in the area.

Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
The Rising by Kelley Armstrong
The Treatment by Suzanne Young

And because I apparently don't already have enough e-galleys unread, I snagged this one from Netgalley:

Lefty's Lowdown: The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder

The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder
(standalone)
Published: January 1, 2011 by Razorbill
Source: Purchased
Summary from Goodreads:
Dry, sarcastic, sixteen-year-old Cam Cooper has spent the last seven years in and out hospitals. The last thing she wants to do in the short life she has left is move 1,500 miles away to Promise, Maine - a place known for the miraculous events that occur there. But it's undeniable that strange things happen in Promise: everlasting sunsets; purple dandelions; flamingoes in the frigid Atlantic; an elusive boy named Asher; and finally, a mysterious envelope containing a list of things for Cam to do before she dies. As Cam checks each item off the list, she finally learns to believe - in love, in herself, and even in miracles.

A debut novel from an immensely talented new writer, The Probability of Miracles crackles with wit, romance and humor and will leave readers laughing and crying with each turn of the page.

I thought the premise of this book sounded different & interesting, I'd heard good things about this book, and the cover is SO PURRDY. Sounds like a recipe for success, right? Well, unfortunately I was disappointed by this book. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and becoming absorbed in the story.

My biggest issue with this novel was the protagonist. I don't usually mind dry and sarcastic, but Cam was also negative and a total downer. I get it, she has cancer so she has an excuse. I'd probably be the same way. That doesn't mean it was fun to read about. She didn't believe in anything, and not only did she make sure everyone knew it, but she also condescended on people when they did believe in something (like miracles, for instance). I feel like Cam was a fan of the old adage "misery loves company" because she clearly wanted everyone to be bitter and miserable like herself. And the other characters? They were all fine, but we don't get to know them all that well, and honestly I just didn't care about them that much.

I'll admit, there is a shift toward the second half of the book when Cam starts being more positive and lighter, funnier events begin to occur. However, the shift isn't a gradual transition. To me, it felt like a switch was flipped. All of a sudden Cam and Asher, the love interest, were in love and Cam was more open to miracles and everything was looking up. All I could think was, "What? Where did all this come from?????" Don't get me wrong--the second half is what saved this novel for me, but I just feel like it was all so sudden.

In the end, this story left me unsatisfied. I thought there was a general lack of depth and I still had some questions in the end. For instance, IS THIS BOOK MAGICAL REALISM?? I DON'T GET IT. This question still plagues me. Like, there were hints that the town really was producing miracles but was that magic or just coincidence or what? Also, a big part of Asher's storyline was that he was afraid to leave Promise, Maine and do something with his life and I don't feel like that was sufficiently resolved. Surprisingly, though, I did cry in the end. I really didn't expect to because I spent most of the book not caring much about the protagonist, but the ending was written beautifully and it just really got to me.

Clearly, this book didn't exactly do it for me. It was okay. I know I didn't really highlight a lot of the positive stuff , but there were some parts I enjoyed (mostly in the 2nd half of the book). Still, I'd say the parts that would make this book unique and make it stand out (the quirkiness, the weird stuff happening in town) were not as prominent as I would have liked them to be, so it fell flat.

Sunday Post #22

  • I've definitely been a bit slumpy these past two weeks, which is annoying because I'd just come out of a blogging slump. But this was more of an everything slump. I didn't want to read or write or blog or make videos. I think I'm finally coming out of it, though. I've felt much more motivated to do ALL THE THINGS.
  • I've also been a bit sick. I felt a cold start to come on last Sunday, but it wasn't too bad. I still went to Branson with my dad to go out to eat and to go shopping on Tuesday, and then I went to see the movie Sausage Party on Thursday with my friend. I've also squeezed in a few shifts at work in an effort to make a little money before heading back to school.

Sunday Post #21

  • I SAW TWENTY ONE PILOTS LIVE THIS WEEK. It was incredible. One of the best nights of my life. I cannot even possibly explain how fantastic it was to see my favorite musicians in concert. They put on phenomenal shows, so if you ever have the opportunity to see one of their concerts, I definitely recommend it.
  • Also, I saw the movie Nerve this week, and, while it was far from being a perfect movie, I really enjoyed it! Dave Franco shirtless is everything.
  • That said, I'm glad I had most of the week scheduled in advance because I did barely any blogging and exactly no reading. I've been binge-watching Glee and The Fosters and now Switched At Birth.

July Recap

Time to reflect on my month!

Okay, July was not my most eventful month! I hung out with my friends quite a bit--going swimming, to the movies, out to eat, etc. I also went to Silver Dollar City (which is a theme park near me), and I saw Kian Lawley & Jc Caylen (famous YouTubers) on tour.

Thanks to BookTube-A-Thon, I did much more reading than usual, which is wonderful! However, there was a point that I slipped into a blogging slump and had a lot of trouble finding the motivation to blog. I've conquered that, though, and I've come back with lots of fun stuff planned for August!

ANYWAY.

This is a re-read, but I don't care. It was still incredible!

Last month's TBR:
I read 3/4 books I'd planned to read in July, so I did a pretty good job!

This month's TBR:

School starts back up this month so I honestly have no clue how much reading I'll get done, but hopefully I'll get through all of these!
BookTube:
Here is my most popular video this month! I'll be (ideally) posting twice a week. Make sure to subscribe to me if you want to stay updated on when and what I post! If you have a YouTube channel, send me your link because I wanna see whatchya got!

Music:
So I'm probably a little late to the party on these, but here are two of my favorite songs that I discovered this month!
Lost Boy - Ruth B
Cecelia and the Satellite - Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness
TV:
I have been all about Glee this month! I'm so addicted to this show. It was getting a bit out of hand (I watched 3 seasons in less than a week) so I had to force myself to take a break, but now I'm back at it. I'm on season 5 now and even though it's kind of a mess right now, I don't want it to be over!
Movies:
There have been so many wonderful movies released lately, and though I haven't seen all the ones I want to (Finding Dory, I'm looking at you), I have seen a few that were amazing!
The Shallows, which is basically about a shark attack, is SO. TENSE. I kind of expected it to be really stupid, but it kept me on the edge of my seat.
I also saw the new Purge movie and holy crap is it twisted! The previous Purge movies were child's play in comparison. It's about election year, so there's politics and just so much crazy shit going down.
